Discovered a pile of old challans while selling your car or renewing insurance? You’re not alone – Delhi has over 2 crore pending challans. Here’s how to deal with old ones.
Do Old Challans Expire?
No. Traffic challans don’t simply lapse. Unpaid challans typically move from the traffic police to the Virtual Court and then to a regular court. They can block RC transfer, NOC and other Parivahan services.
Step 1: Find All Old Challans
- echallan.parivahan.gov.in – by vehicle number and DL number
- traffic.delhipolice.gov.in – Delhi notices
- vcourts.gov.in – Virtual Court (Delhi Traffic)
See Delhi traffic police challan check.
Step 2: Sort Them by Status
| Status | Best way to clear |
|---|---|
| Still with police | Pay online |
| Virtual Court | Pay or contest online |
| Court – compoundable | Lok Adalat / Weekend Court / Evening Court |
| Court – non-compoundable | Appear in court, ideally with an advocate |
Step 3: Use the Lok Adalat for Bulk Settlement
Old compoundable challans are exactly what Lok Adalat is designed for. Each notice has a cut-off date (reports say challans pending up to 30 June 2026 are covered for the 25 October 2026 Lok Adalat). Read Delhi Lok Adalat October 2026.
What About the Amnesty Scheme?
A one-time amnesty with 50–70% waiver was proposed but reported stalled for legal review. Don’t wait indefinitely – see amnesty scheme update.
Challans From Before You Bought the Vehicle?
Challans issued before your purchase date should be the previous owner’s responsibility. Collect the sale documents and contest them. Sold your vehicle? Read challan on a sold vehicle.
