What Is an E-Challan?

An e-challan (electronic challan) is a digital traffic ticket issued under the Motor Vehicles Act through the government’s e-Challan system run by MoRTH and NIC. It is generated by traffic cameras, speed sensors or police officers using handheld devices, and is sent by SMS to the mobile number linked with your vehicle. E-challans are linked to your vehicle registration and driving licence in the VAHAN and SARATHI databases.

How to Check E-Challan Status

  1. Visit the official portal echallan.parivahan.gov.in and open Check Challan Status.
  2. Choose Challan Number, Vehicle Number or DL Number and enter the details with the captcha.
  3. View the list of pending and disposed challans, with offence, date, place and amount.
  4. Click on a challan to see photo evidence where available, or download the challan PDF.

How to Pay an E-Challan

Pending e-challans can be paid on the same portal using UPI, debit/credit card or net banking. If the status shows “sent to court” or “Virtual Court”, payment must be made on vcourts.gov.in or the challan must be settled in court. Read our online challan payment guide.
