“Delhi challan 50% off” is one of the most searched challan phrases in the capital. WhatsApp forwards and random websites promise half-price challans – some true, many misleading. This guide separates facts from rumours so you know exactly when and how a Delhi traffic challan can legally cost you less.
Quick Answer
| Route | Is a ~50% saving possible? | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Compounding at 50% (Delhi Govt notification, Sept 2024) | Yes, for listed MV Act sections | Announced Sept 2024 with time limits |
| National Lok Adalat | Often 20–50% reported, not guaranteed | Next Delhi Lok Adalat: 25 Oct 2026 |
| One-time amnesty scheme | Proposed 50–70% waiver | Reported stalled for legal review (Dec 2025) |
| Random websites/apps offering “50% off” | Be careful | Not an official scheme |
1. The 2024 Half-Penalty Compounding Rule
In September 2024, the Delhi Government announced that certain traffic offences could be compounded at 50% of the challan amount. As reported by The Statesman and The Tribune, the provision covered offences under specific Motor Vehicles Act sections – including driving without a licence, allowing an unauthorised person to drive, dangerous driving, driving uninsured or unregistered vehicles and several sections between 177 and 196.
Key conditions reported at the time:
- Officers of Head Constable rank and above in Delhi Traffic Police and the Transport Department (and DTC’s Assistant Traffic Inspectors) were authorised to compound.
- Existing challans had to be settled within 90 days of the notification.
- For new challans, the window to settle was 30 days.
What this means for you: the half-penalty route is time-bound. If your challan has crossed the window or has already been sent to court, the compounding option at 50% may no longer apply – the challan will then follow the court or Lok Adalat route.
2. Lok Adalat – The Most Common Way to Pay Less
The National Lok Adalat is where most Delhi motorists actually save money on old challans. News reports have said savings of roughly 20% to 50% are common on eligible compoundable challans, but the bench decides the amount and there is no fixed official discount.
- Next Delhi Lok Adalat: 25 October 2026 (Sunday)
- Only compoundable challans pending in court are eligible
- Slip download happens on the Delhi Traffic Police website

3. The Delhi Challan Amnesty Scheme
In 2025, reports said the Delhi Government planned a one-time amnesty scheme with a 50–70% waiver on old pending challans. Delhi has over 2.46 crore unpaid challans. However, as of December 2025 the proposal was reported to be stalled for legal review, because many challans are under court consideration. Until the government officially notifies it, no amnesty discount is available. See Delhi challan amnesty scheme update.
4. New 2026 Rules: 50% Deposit Before Court Appeal
Don’t confuse “50% off” with the new 50% deposit rule. Under the amended Central Motor Vehicles Rules being operationalised in Delhi (reported September 2026), you get 45 days to pay or contest a challan online. If your grievance is rejected and you want to go to court, you must first deposit at least 50% of the penalty. That’s not a discount – it’s a deposit. Details: new traffic challan rules in Delhi.
How to Check If You Can Pay Less
- Check your challans on echallan.parivahan.gov.in and traffic.delhipolice.gov.in.
- Note whether each challan is pending with police, in Virtual Court or sent to court.
- Court challans → Lok Adalat, Evening Court or Weekend Court.
- Wrong challans → contest them instead of paying.

Is there a 50% discount on Delhi traffic challans?
The Delhi Government announced compounding at 50% of the challan amount for certain MV Act sections in September 2024, with time limits. Beyond that, Lok Adalat may reduce eligible challans (often reported at 20–50%), but there is no permanent flat 50% discount.
Is the Delhi challan amnesty scheme live?
Not as of the latest reports. The proposed 50–70% waiver was reported to be under legal review in December 2025. Only an official government notification will make it live.
Where can I get my Delhi challan reduced?
Compoundable challans pending in court can be settled in the National Lok Adalat (next on 25 October 2026), where the bench may fix a lower amount.
Is the new 50% deposit rule a discount?
No. Under the amended rules, if your grievance is rejected and you appeal in court, you must deposit at least 50% of the penalty first. It is a deposit, not a discount.
