Thousands of people reach Delhi court complexes on Lok Adalat day only to be told that their challan “is not eligible”. The reason is simple: Lok Adalat can only settle compoundable traffic offences that are pending in court. This article explains in plain language which challans qualify and which don’t.
What Does “Compoundable” Mean?
A compoundable offence is one that can be settled by paying a fine without a full trial. Most everyday traffic violations under the Motor Vehicles Act fall in this category. Serious offences that endanger life, or that are treated as criminal, are non-compoundable and must go through the regular court process.
Eligible Challans (Usually Settled in Lok Adalat)
| Offence | Common MV Act section |
|---|---|
| Overspeeding | 183 |
| Red-light jumping / signal violation | 184 / 177 |
| Riding without helmet | 194D |
| Driving without seatbelt | 194B |
| Wrong / no parking | 177 / 122 |
| No PUC certificate | 190(2) |
| Defective or no number plate | 177 / 192 |
| Stop-line violation, lane violation | 177 |
| Triple riding | 194C |
Non-Eligible Challans
- Drunk driving (Section 185)
- Hit-and-run or accident cases involving injury or death
- Dangerous driving where the matter is criminal
- Juvenile / underage driving (Section 199A)
- Challans involving forged documents or other IPC/BNS offences
- Challans still pending with traffic police (not sent to court)
The Cut-Off Date Rule
Every Lok Adalat notice mentions a cut-off – challans issued or sent to court up to a certain date are included. For the 25 October 2026 Delhi Lok Adalat, reports mention compoundable challans pending up to 30 June 2026. A challan issued in August 2026 would generally not be listed.
How to Check If Your Challan Is Eligible
- Check status on echallan.parivahan.gov.in. If it says “Pending” (not court), you can usually pay online.
- If it says “Sent to Court” or “Virtual Court”, check the Lok Adalat section on the Delhi Traffic Police website when slip download opens.
- Only challans shown there can be selected for a slip.
Not Eligible? Here’s What You Can Do
- Pending with police: pay online – see our online challan payment guide.
- In Virtual Court: pay or contest on vcourts.gov.in – see Virtual Court guide.
- In regular court, compoundable: use the Evening Court or Weekend Court.
- Non-compoundable (e.g. drunk driving): you will need to appear in the regular court – an advocate is strongly recommended.
