Overspeeding Challan in Delhi: Fine, Speed Limits & How to Settle

Overspeeding is one of the most common challans in Delhi, thanks to speed cameras on ring roads, expressways and arterial roads. Here’s what the fine is and how to deal with it.

Overspeeding Fine Under the MV Act

VehiclePenalty (Section 183)
Light motor vehicle (car, two-wheeler)₹1,000 – ₹2,000
Medium / heavy vehicle₹2,000 – ₹4,000

Repeat offences can attract licence action. Actual compounding amounts may differ – always check your challan.

Typical Speed Limits in Delhi

Delhi Traffic Police notifies speed limits by road and vehicle type. Many arterial roads have limits around 50–60 km/h for cars, lower limits for heavy vehicles and near schools, and higher limits on certain expressway stretches. Watch for signboards – camera challans are based on the notified limit for that stretch.

How Speed Camera Challans Work

Speed cameras record the vehicle’s speed and number plate and generate an e-challan automatically. You receive an SMS with the challan number. Always verify it on echallan.parivahan.gov.in – and beware of fake challan SMS.

How to Settle an Overspeeding Challan

  1. Pending with police: pay online.
  2. In Virtual Court: pay or contest on vcourts.gov.in.
  3. In regular court: overspeeding is compoundable, so it can usually be settled in the Lok Adalat, Evening Court or Weekend Court.

Can You Contest It?

Yes, if the photo doesn’t show your vehicle, the number was misread, or the vehicle was elsewhere. See how to contest a wrong challan.

Drive Safe, Save Money

Use navigation apps that show speed limits, keep a steady speed, and slow down near camera zones and schools. One challan may seem small, but multiple overspeeding challans add up quickly. Check the complete traffic challan fine list.
