Many people ignore e-challans hoping they’ll disappear. They don’t. Here’s what really happens when you don’t pay a traffic challan – and how to fix it.
The Typical Timeline
- Challan issued – SMS sent to vehicle-linked mobile.
- Payment window – usually 60–90 days to pay online.
- Forwarded to Virtual Court – a judicial officer proposes a fine online.
- Transferred to regular court – if still unpaid.
- Summons / notice – you may be asked to appear.
- Further action – the court may take coercive steps in rare cases of repeated non-appearance.
Practical Consequences
- RC transfer and NOC blocked – Parivahan may not process services while challans are pending.
- Insurance and fitness hassles – especially for commercial vehicles.
- Licence issues – some offences carry suspension or disqualification.
- More time and effort – court visits instead of a 2-minute online payment.
- Problems while selling – buyers check challans.
Can Old Challans Be Waived?
Generally no. Challans don’t simply expire. However, compoundable challans pending in court can be settled in the National Lok Adalat, sometimes at a reduced amount. The next Delhi Lok Adalat is on 25 October 2026.
How to Clear Old Pending Challans
| Where your challan is | Best way to clear |
|---|---|
| With traffic police | Pay online |
| Virtual Court | Pay or contest on vcourts.gov.in |
| Regular court (compoundable) | Lok Adalat, Evening or Weekend Court |
| Regular court (non-compoundable) | Appear in court, ideally with an advocate |

Do traffic challans expire if not paid?
No. Unpaid challans move to Virtual Court and then regular court; they do not simply lapse.
Can I sell my car with pending challans?
Pending challans can block RC transfer and NOC, so clear them before selling.
Can police arrest me for unpaid challans?
For ordinary compoundable challans, arrest is very unlikely, but ignoring court summons repeatedly can lead to coercive court processes.
