What Is Lok Adalat?

Lok Adalat (“people’s court”) is an alternative dispute resolution forum set up under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987. In Delhi, the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA), together with the District Courts and Delhi Traffic Police, holds National Lok Adalats a few times a year where pending compoundable traffic challans can be settled quickly – often for an amount lower than the court would otherwise impose. A settlement in Lok Adalat is final, and the challan is disposed of the same day.

Which Traffic Challans Are Eligible?

  • Overspeeding
  • Red-light / signal jumping
  • Riding without helmet, driving without seatbelt
